Yesterday I was able to spend a fair amount of time in the Studio working on the Big painting. Then Cathy came by with Lila and took this shot.

The painting actually dwarfs me. Although at times it feels daunting to be working on such a big piece, most of the time it is very exciting. Challenging as well. But even when it feels like it’s becoming a hopeless mess, somehow I am able to paint my way out of that particular corner.

In fact, I was so absorbed in the piece after working on it yesterday, it kept drifting through my vision the rest of the day and into the night. I’m eager to get back to it. Especially now when I’m beginning to see a painting emerging.

I’m not totally convinced about the acrylic paint although it is definitely necessary for this piece. I’m learning a lot as I go along about how to use it to my advantage. I enjoy seeing how different layers create new colors. I’ve been working mostly with transparent colors so I could build up the paint this way. Now I want to make it even more dense, solid, probably with some opaque colors. Then the painting will have more definition, a personality of its own.
