On Friday evening, I will be exhibiting new work at the Secord Gallery in Halifax. Opening reception 7 – 9 pm; the title of the show is “Relativity”. Then on Sunday, I will be going to Annapolis Royal, NS, for the opening reception of my exhibit there entitled “Let’s Talk”. Having two exhibits so close together was my idea. The last exhibit I had at the Orange Gallery, I called Coincidentally. The current one is Suppose We Do. These phrases are born from the way I work. Not planned, just accidents, possibilities, suggestions, choices. If I did know what I was going to do, how the painting would become, it would lose what makes it vital. Meanwhile, I’ve been painting almost every day. It’s hard, vigorous physical labour, standing for hours while using repetitive arm movements. I have to be careful not to use my right arm too much or I will get a sore arm and a headache. So I use my left arm when I remember. It is liberating to do so not only because it is not the arm I usually write with but also because I don’t have the same control. My left arm makes a different kind of mark than the right.
